Green plantains (pachakaya)are very popular in south India. In malabar area we used to call upperi for thoran or mezhukkupuratti.But in central part of kerala, Upperi is Banana chips:).you can make upperi with long beans,carrot,yam,bittergourd, etc…This side dish goes well with rice and curd

ethakka thoran


  1. Raw Plantain(Banana) – 3
  2. Grated coconut – 1/2 cup
  3. Shallots – 7
  4. Green chilly ( cut lengthwise) – 3
  5. Dry red chilly – 4
  6. Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  7. Oil – 2 tbsp
  8. Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  9. Curry leaves
  10. Salt


  1. Peel off plantain and cut into small pieces.
  2. Boil with little salt and turmeric powder till soft.
  3. Heat oil in a pan. splutter mustard seeds,curry leaves and dry red chilly.
  4. Add chopped shallots,green chilly and saute well.
  5. Add boiled plantain and stir slowly.
  6. Add grated coconut(grind it to a coarse paste) to it and mix well.
  7. Garnish with curry leaves.
