Ingredients:

  1. Chana dal – 250 gms
  2. Green chilly – 10
  3. Shallots – 12
  4. Ginger – 2 piece
  5. Curry leaves
  6. Salt
  7. oil

Preparation:

  1. Soak dal for 2-3 hrs. You can use toor dal instead of chana dal.
  2. Grind it into a coarse paste.Don’t add water while grinding.The mixture should be thick.
  3. Add chopped ginger,green chilly,shallots,curry leaves,salt  to it and mix well.
  4. Wet your palms and make small balls with  the mix and flatten into round patties.
  5. Heat oil in a pan. Deep fry vadas till golden brown in color.
  6. Serve with hot tea and Ketch up.

lentil curry

 

This recipe is adapted from devagi sanmugham’s(devagi’s restaurant) recipes.she is considered as the spice queen of Singapore and has written so many cook books .This is a traditional punjabi recipe and goes well with roti or rice.

Ingredients:

  1. chana dal -125gms
  2. Urad dal – 125gms
  3. Moong dal – 125gms
  4. Masoor dal – 125gms
  5. Toor dal – 125 gms
  6. Onion(medium,chopped) -1
  7. Ginger-garlic paste – 1tbsp
  8. Green chilly(chopped) – 3
  9. Tomatoes(medium) – 2
  10. Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
  11. Chilly powder – 1 tsp
  12. Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  13. Butter – 2tbsp
  14. Oil – 2 tbsp
  15. Salt
  16. Coriander leaves

preparation:

  1. Clean and wash all the lentils thoroughly in several changes of water.
  2. pressure cook dal with turmeric powder and sufficient water  until it is soft and broken.Add salt  and stir well to prevent from sticking to the bottom .
  3. Keep the lentils on low simmer while making fried seasonings.
  4. Heat oil in a pan.Add onions and fry till light brown.add ginger-garlic paste,green chilly and  fry for 2 mins.
  5. Then Add chopped tomatoes and fry till slightly  brown.
  6. Pour the entire contents of the pan over the dal and gently stir to mix.continue stirring while you make the spiced butter.
  7. Heat butter in a pan and add cumin seeds and chilly powder. Immediately pour the entire contents of the pan over the dal.
  8. Combine well and remove from heat.
  9. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves
