I have tried pachadi with bitter gourd,okra,cucumber but never tried with pumpkin.This is an easy and different style of  pachadi recipe prepared using pumpkin in coconut milk and curd.

Mathan Pachadi (1)



  1. Pumpkin (chop into small pieces) – 1 cup
  2. Shallots – 2 tbsp
  3. Ginger(grated) – 1 tbsp
  4. Green chilly(chopped) –1 tbsp
  5. Mustard(crushed) – 1 tbsp
  6. Thick Coconut milk – 1 cup
  7. Curd – 1/2 cup
  8. Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  9. Shallots (cut into round pieces) –1
  10. Dry red chilly – 1
  11. Curry leaves- 1 sprig
  12. Oil – 3 tbsp
  13. Salt

Mathan Pachadi (4)


  1. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a  pan.Add chopped shallots,ginger,green chilly and saute well.
  2. Add pumpkin pieces to it and mix well.
  3. Add crushed mustard,coconut milk ,salt and let it boil.once it is cooked well,remove from fire.
  4. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan.Splutter  mustard seeds.once it is done, add shallots,dry red chilly,curry leaves and add it to the pumpkin mix.
  5. Let it cool.once it is cool, add curd to it and mix well.
  6. Pachadi is ready to serve with rice.

Pazham Nirachathu is a popular snack in Malabar cuisine of Kerala and it is usually served during Iftar Parties.It is prepared by filling bananas with grated coconut sugar,cashews and nuts and then coated with Maida batter and light fry till brown.This is a healthy and yummy snack for kids.

Pazham Nirachathu (1)


  1. Bananas(Ripe) – 2
  2. Grated Coconut – 1/4 cup
  3. Cashews – 4
  4. Raisins – 6
  5. Sugar – 4 tbsp
  6. Cardamom Powder/elakka – 1 tsp
  7. Maida – 6 tbsp
  8. Water
  9. Ghee
  10. Oil

  1. Heat ghee in a pan.Fry cashews and raisins till light brown.Keep aside.
  2. In another pan,add ghee and fry grated coconut and sugar till coconut becomes light brown in color.
  3. Add the fried cashews,cardamom powder and raisins to it and mix well.Filling is ready.Let it cool.
  4. Peel off the banana skin.Make slit lengthwise without cutting the ends and remove the black seeds carefully .Place the filling into the slit using hand.
  5. Make a thick paste of maida,salt  and water.Seal the slit using the paste.
  6. Heat little oil in a heavy bottomed pan. Carefully place the banana and fry till all sides are golden brown.
  7. Cut into 3 pieces and serve as tea time snack.

Unnakaya is a popular Malabar snack and it is prepared with boiled and mashed  banana stuffed with coconut, sugar and nuts and then deep fried in Oil.This snack resembles the shape of unnakaya  which means cotton pod and hence the name. This is a traditional Muslim dish prepared during Malabar weddings and festivals like Ramzan.Normally in traditional recipe, scrambled eggs are added to the stuffing. But I didn’t add it as I don’t like egg in grated coconutSmile.This is a healthy snack for kids and my little one who is a fussy eater liked this snack a lot.

Unnakaya  (2)


  1. Plaintain/Nentrapazham (medium ripe) –2
  2. Grated Coconut – 1/4 cup
  3. Cashewnuts – 1tbsp
  4. Raisins – 8
  5. Sugar – 5tbsp (or add according to your taste)
  6. Ghee – 1 tbsp.
  7. Cardamom Powder – 1tsp
  8. Coconut Oil – for frying

  1. Steam cook bananas on medium flame till bananas are soft.Remove the outer skin and cut into halves. Discard the inner black seeds. Mash well using a wooden spoon without any lumps.The consistency should be thick.If it is too sticky, add little rice flour to it and mix well to get a thick dough like consistency. Keep aside.
  2. Heat ghee in a pan. Add cashew nuts, raisins, grated coconut and sugar to it.Let it sauté on low flame .Add cardamom powder to it.Stir well. Remove from fire and allow to cool.
  3. Divide the mashed bananas into evenly sized lemon balls.Rub oil on your palms.Take one ball in your left hand and flatten it  by pressing using other hand to form a circle shape.
  4. Place 1 tbsp of coconut stuffing in the center and seal it properly by bringing all the sides of the mix.
  5. Shape into cylindrical or oval shapes(as seen in the pic)
  6. Heat oil in a kadai.Deep fry bananas till golden yellow in color.
