Bread Masala
A family recipe since May 2009
A quick, comforting spiced bread stir-fry that turns plain slices into a savory, peppery snack. Ready in about 20 minutes and perfect for breakfast or an evening tea-time bite.
20 min total3 servings
Ingredients
- Bread - 6 slice
- Onion - 3 whole
- Tomato - 2 whole
- Red chili powder - 1/2 tsp
- Coriander powder - 3/4 tsp
- Pepper powder - 1 1/2 tsp
- Vegetable masala powder - 1 tsp
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
- Ghee - 4 tbsp
- Coriander leaves
- Salt, to taste
Instructions
- 1Remove the crusts from the bread and cut each slice into square pieces; set the pieces aside.
- 2Chop the onions and tomatoes so they are ready to cook.
- 3Heat 2 tbsp ghee in a wide pan over medium heat. Add the bread pieces and fry them until they are light brown and crisp at the edges; this is just like toasting bread.
- 4Transfer the fried bread to a plate and leave the remaining ghee in the pan for the masala.
- 5In the pan with the remaining ghee, splutter the mustard seeds, then add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn brown.
- 6Add the chopped tomatoes and sauté until the mixture is well combined and the tomatoes have softened.
- 7Stir in the red chili powder, coriander powder, and vegetable masala powder; when the raw smell disappears, add the pepper powder and salt, and stir well.
- 8Return the fried bread pieces to the pan and toss gently so they soak up the masala; turn off the heat.
- 9Garnish with coriander leaves and serve immediately.
- 10Optional: serve warm with a cup of tea.
