Classic Vanilla Fruit Custard
A family recipe since May 2008
A silky vanilla custard tossed with fresh fruit—quick to make, chilled to set, and perfect for a light dessert any night of the week.
70 min total4 servings
Ingredients
- Vanilla custard powder - 3 tbsp
- Milk - 2 cup
- Sugar - 6 tbsp
- Apple - 1 whole
- Banana - 2 whole
- Black seedless grapes - 1 cup
Instructions
- 1Whisk the vanilla custard powder with a little cold milk to form a smooth, lump-free paste.
- 2Pour the remaining 2 cups milk into a medium saucepan, add the custard paste, and bring the mixture to a boil, whisking constantly so no lumps form.
- 3When the custard starts to thicken, remove the pan from the heat and stir in 6 tbsp sugar until dissolved to keep the texture silky.
- 4Let the custard cool to room temperature, then transfer it to the refrigerator and chill for 1 hr; the custard will become thicker as it cools.
- 5While the custard chills, prepare the fruit: cut the apple into medium pieces, peel the bananas and slice them into rounds, and rinse the black seedless grapes (halve them if you prefer smaller bites).
- 6Add the prepared fruits only at the time of serving and gently fold them into the chilled custard, or spoon the custard over the fruit so the fruit keeps its fresh texture.
- 7Optional: serve with orange segments, sliced strawberries, or a sprinkle of pomegranate seeds for extra brightness.
