Vishu Kani: How to Arrange a Traditional Vishukani

A family recipe since April 2008

Arrange a simple, beautiful Vishukani the night before Vishu and welcome the new year with an auspicious first sight. This friendly guide walks you through the items to gather and the gentle ritual of viewing and sharing the vishukaineetam.

45 min total4 servings

Ingredients

  • Kanikonna flowers
  • Oil lamp or diya
  • Mirror
  • Rice
  • Fresh fruits (banana, mango, or seasonal fruit)
  • Betel leaves
  • Coconut
  • Garland for the deity
  • Coin (gold coin or 1 rupee coin) - 1 whole

Instructions

  1. 1Arrange the Vishukani the previous night so everything is ready to be seen first thing in the morning.
  2. 2Select a low table or basin and place a mirror at the back so the items will reflect; this helps make the kani feel full and bright.
  3. 3Place the kanikonna flowers prominently and add rice, fresh fruits, betel leaves, a coconut, and the coin (a gold coin or 1 rupee coin) among the other auspicious items.
  4. 4If you keep a lamp, position it where it can be safely lit at dawn and keep an oil lamp or diya nearby for the early morning ritual.
  5. 5Make a simple garland for the deity if you like, using the yellow flowers you have; it is a small, personal touch that connects the arrangement to your family tradition.
  6. 6Wake early on Vishu and light the lamp between 3 am and 4 am so the kani is illuminated for the first view; the gentle flame sets a calm, sacred tone.
  7. 7Have the eldest female member guide each person to the kani by closing their eyes, bringing them to the arrangement, and letting them open their eyes to see the Vishukani for the first time.
  8. 8After everyone has seen the Vishukani, the eldest member distributes the vishukaineetam (a gold coin or 1 rupee coin) to children or family members as a blessing of prosperity.
  9. 9Enjoy a moment of quiet together after the viewing, then continue with your family celebrations; optionally, follow the ritual with a small traditional breakfast or favorite sweet.
