Jackfruit Kozhukatta (Chakka Varattiyathu Dumplings)

A family recipe since May 2007

Soft, steamed dumplings made from sweet jackfruit jam and rice flour, filled with coconut and jaggery. A comforting South Indian treat that shines at breakfast or with afternoon tea.

40 min total6 servings

Ingredients

  • Jackfruit jam (chakka varattiyathu) - 1 cup
  • Rice flour - 1 cup
  • Jaggery - 5 whole
  • Cardamom powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Coconut - 1/2 cup

Instructions

  1. 1Grate the coconut and crush the jaggery, then combine them in a bowl to make the sweet filling; mix until the jaggery is evenly distributed through the coconut.
  2. 2In a separate bowl, combine the jackfruit jam, rice flour and cardamom powder and knead gently to form a soft, pliable dough.
  3. 3Divide the dough into small equal pieces and roll each piece into a smooth ball.
  4. 4Flatten a dough ball into a disc in your palm, add a spoonful of the coconut and jaggery filling in the center, then bring the edges together and seal to enclose the filling.
  5. 5Arrange the filled dumplings in an idli tray and steam in an idli cooker until they are well cooked and set.
  6. 6Allow the kozhukattai to rest for a few minutes so they firm up slightly, then serve warm for the best texture.
  7. 7Optional: drizzle with a little ghee before serving for extra richness.
