I tried stir fry with taro stem and this time going to share a recipe of making pachadi.

  1. Taro stem(chop into small pieces) – 1 cup
  2. Grated coconut- 1/2 cup
  3. Mustard seeds- 11/2 tsp
  4. Green chilly – 2
  5. Curd – 1/2 cup
  6. salt
  7. Coconut oil
  8. Dry red chilly –2
  9. Curry leaves

  1. Grind grated coconut,mustard seeds(1 tsp) ,green chilly, curd into a fine paste.Keep aside.
  2. Peel off the outer skin of taro stem and chop into small pieces.while cutting stem, apply a little oil to the palms to avoid itching.
  3. Boil water and add chopped taro stem,salt to it.
  4. Cover and cook on medium flame for 4-5 minutes till cooked well.let it cool.
  5. Add the curd mix to it and mix well.
  6. Heat oil.splutter mustard seeds,dry red chilly ,curry leaves. Add the seasonings to the curd mix.
  7. Pachadi is ready to serve with rice as side dish.

chembhu Thal Thoran is popular in kerala is prepared by taro stem sautéed in coconut and can make variety of dishes like pachadi,kalan(kerala style yogurt curry)using taro stem.This side dish goes well with rice.

  1. Taro stem/Chembhu taal -  4
  2. Grated coconut – 1/4 cup
  3. Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
  4. Dry red chilly –2
  5. Urad dal – 1/4 tsp
  6. Curry leaves
  7. coconut Oil
  8. Salt

  1. Peel of the outer skin and cut into small pieces.Add salt to it and mix well.Keep aside for 10 minutes.Squeeze out the excess water.Apply oil on both palms to avoid itchiness.
  2. Heat coconut oil in  a pan.Splutter mustard seeds,urad dal,dry red chilly and once it is done add grated coconut,curry leaves to it.stir well for 2 minutes.
  3. Finally add chopped taro stem to it and mix well.cook on medium flame for 5 minutes till it is dry.
  4. serve with rice.

Thoran is popular in kerala cuisine and I always make thoran using cabbage and carrot. But this healthy broccoli thoran is easy to make and taste delicious.

Broccoli Thoran (2)


  1. Broccoli(Cut into medium florets) – 2 cups
  2. Shallots (chopped) – 2 tsp
  3. Grated Coconut – 3 tbsp
  4. Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  5. Curry leaves
  6. Garlic(chopped) – 1/4 tsp
  7. Green Chilly(chopped) – 1
  8. Turmeric powder – a pinch
  9. Salt
  10. Coconut Oil

  1. Heat coconut oil in  a pan.Add mustard seeds and let it splutter.
  2. Add shallots,curry leaves,garlic ,green chilly ,grated coconut and turmeric powder. Saute till onions are light brown.
  3. Add broccoli and salt. Mix well.
  4. Cover and cook on low flame for 3-4 minutes.
  5. Remove from fire.
  6. Serve with rice as side dish.
